Production of cold molecules via magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances

چکیده
Magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances were employed to associate cold diatomic molecules in a series of experiments involving both atomic Bose as well as two spin component Fermi gases. This review illustrates theoretical concepts of both the particular nature of the highly excited Feshbach molecules produced and the techniques for their association from unbound atom pairs. Coupled channels theory provides the rigorous formulation of the microscopic physics of Feshbach resonances in cold gases. Concepts of dressed versus bare energy states, universal properties of Feshbach molecules, as well as the classification in terms of entranceand closed-channel dominated resonances are introduced on the basis of practical two-channel approaches. Their significance is illustrated for several experimental observations, such as binding energies and lifetimes with respect to collisional relaxation. Molecular association and dissociation are discussed in the context of techniques involving linear magnetic field sweeps in cold Bose and Fermi gases as well as pulse sequences leading to Ramsey-type interference fringes. Their descriptions in terms of Landau-Zener, two-level mean field as well as beyond mean field approaches are reviewed in detail, including the associated ranges of validity.

Spontaneous dissociation of long-range Feshbach molecules.
We study the spontaneous dissociation of diatomic molecules produced in cold atomic gases via magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances. We provide a universal formula for the lifetime of these molecules that relates their decay to the scattering length and the loss rate constant for inelastic spin relaxation. Our universal treatment as well as our exact coupled channels calculations for 85Rb di...
متن کاملMagnetically tunable Feshbach resonances in ultracold Li-Yb mixtures.
We investigate the possibility of forming Li+Yb ultracold molecules by magnetoassociation in mixtures of ultracold atoms. We find that magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances exist, but are extremely narrow for even-mass ytterbium isotopes, which all have zero spin. For odd-mass Yb isotopes, however, there is a new mechanism due to hyperfine coupling between the electron spin and the Yb nuclea...
متن کاملPhotoassociation as a probe of Feshbach resonances in cold-atom scattering
We investigate theoretically the influence of magnetically tunable Feshbach collision resonances on the photoassociation spectra of ultracold atoms. As an example we consider recently predicted resonances for Rb atoms. For excitation to the Rb2 0g (S1/21P1/2) electronic state, we predict that the photoassociation rate is resonantly enhanced by at least two orders of magnitude. We find that phot...
متن کاملControlling magnetic Feshbach resonances in polar open-shell molecules with nonresonant light.
Magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances for polar paramagnetic ground-state diatomics are too narrow to allow for magnetoassociation starting from trapped, ultracold atoms. We show that nonresonant light can be used to engineer the Feshbach resonances in their position and width. For nonresonant field intensities of the order of 10(9) W/cm(2), we find the width to be increased by 3 orders of m...
متن کاملOptical control of the scattering length and effective range for magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances in ultracold gases
We describe two-field optical techniques to control interactions in Feshbach resonances for two-body scattering in ultracold gases. These techniques create a molecular dark state in the closed channel of a magnetically tunable Feshbach resonance, greatly suppressing optical scattering compared to single optical field methods. The dark-state method enables control of the effective range, by crea...
